hypnotherapy and addiction

In my ongoing quest to try to find something that will help my son with pain and addiction, I came across the website of a therapist (PhD) who uses hypnotherapy to work through pain, and then move on to deal with the addiction.  I am wondering if anyone has used this type of therapy, and if so, what the results were for you.  Feel free to contact me by PM if you do not want to discuss openly.  Dr. Lois, if you are reading this, I wonder what position the medical community, in general, takes with respect to hypnosis.  Thanks in advance to anyone who is able to respond.

hey...

hello-I wanted to reply to you, because it sucks a bunch when you are trying to either help yourself or someone you love, and nobody seems to have any answers for you. I personally know very little about hypnotherapy, but I have one suggestion you mite consider.

I know quite a number of people who have struggled with both addiction and chronic pain. Its hard to find treatment for that, because you def. dont want to feed the addiction, but you dont want to see them (your son) in pain. Have you thought about or discussed going to a methadone clinic? You wouldnt want to tell them that its for pain, because they treat addicts, but if your son is an addict, then you shoud have no prob getting in. It will help him with both because it is a very strong painkiller, so he will no longer be in pain, but it will also prevent him from drug seeking-they urine test at the clinic, and if he fails then he gets the boot. I hope everything works out for you and your son.

sorry

for not replying earlier.  i have been in some hypnotherapy sessions..and i did not have much luck. After I read your post again i see that you want your son to "learn to work through his pain" . What type of pain? have you taken him to a pain management clinic?  i have little faith in someone who promises to get a patient to work through pain with hypnosis...just my thoughts.
