First off, you seem to have

First off, you seem to have a horrible doctor.

Secondly, wait and see what the nuerosurgeon says. If you are a candidate for surgery or not, etc, etc.

If the pain persists, ask your doctor or neurosurgeon to send you to someone who will treat the pain since they obviously are unwilling to. It's not that complicated of a thing to do, really. I think we are telling you what you already know.

yes

but i'm scared i'v never had surgury before. and this doctor judged me was to early.. soo i know i pulled the i told you so on him. but man. your right. soon as i see the nerosurgen my husband said he is gonna go with me. to talk to him about what is going on with the pain.. its unbarable and vic does not touch the pain of waking up and not being able to sit up striaght or play with my kids. but has anyone ever had surgury done before? were you scared that if something happened while you were sleeping maybe something might have happened?

Amanda,  I have had two

Amanda,  I have had two FAILED sugery's (microdiscectomy's) before where the neuro surgeon goes in and relieves the herniated disk off the nerve.  Both were successful for a few months only!!  I was in trouble of severe nerve damage on the first one or i would NOT have had the surgeries.. So, now i am in a GREAT pain clinic and my dr is probably the best in the u.s.:)  I would say do NOT risk getting the surgery, provided that you find a good Pain Management doc!!Also, I am 29 yrs old and my doc (of 2yrs) is so compassionate but knowledgable (also an anesthesiologist) he is NOT scared to give you what meds he feels like you need, even if that is high dose of narcotic etc..

In fact i went in the other day and he told me he wanted to test my Testosterone level.. He said that its come out that people on pain meds can become depleted of test.. and he runs a PREVENTATOVE practice..  Turns out, it WAS low, via the blood test, and he wrote me a script of THE CLEAR on the spot.. (Some type of Test. gel)

Knowledgable , compassionate dr's are out there, ...  Avoid surgery unless it is absolute last resort... JMHO

Im with Kit, advoid the surgery, unless its the last chance, exhaust all other aves. I wish that I wouldn't have had the two I did. THe pain I had b4 was bad, but at 31, there is no chance for improvement. When I see other Dr.s , actually two of them said that they couldn't believe what they did to my shoulder blade, I have bone gone, bursa gone, muscles det., its not nice. I wish I would have known better all thoes years ago, not just looking for the pain to leave, I bet I could have done somthing other than getting cut open. I had it done at one of the areas top hosp. (detroit area) Its always best to weigh your options. Get second opions, third and fourth if you have to. I was on work comp and had to go and do as told, and like I said I was young, 23, I didn't know my rights as a patient, I thought Dr.s were always out for your well being, not the buck

Lots of people have disc

Lots of people have disc heniation on MRI.  Most of them have no symptoms.  Lots of people have terrible back pain and an essentially  normal MRI.  We need to stop thinking of the MRI as the arbiter of how bad someone's back pain is and whether or not it shows they are telling the truth about the amount of pain they are in.  In many cases disc heniation resolves with conservative therapy (PT, pain management, +/- epidural steroids).  Many back surgeons (they can be neurosurgeons specializing in spinal surgery or orthopedic surgeons specializing in spinal surgery) are reluctant to do surgery for pain alone without neurologic damage or impending neurologic damage.  Surgery done for pain alone is often not completely successful.

Don't get me wrong, I am not

Don't get me wrong, I am not very knowledgeable in surgery, I can only speak to my ow experience, but I have to say that Dr. Lois is dead on. I think that when my surgery was done, it was done to shut me up about all the pain I was having, and I was willing to do anything short of cutting my arm/neck off to get relief. I was really naive, I didn't research it. I did the PT, I was on meds, but since I have been here I didn't realize the different meds available. I seriously thought that the Vics and Loratab were the strongest things available when I was hurt. It was all new to me and so were the meds. I didn't find relief with the ones I was prescribed, and began to panic that this was as good as the pain got. Since coming to this org. I have been learning everyday about my problems, and the possibility that I can too feel better, given time, a good doc (anyone know of one in Det?) and a different course of action. All in all, surgery isn't always a cure.

Hello, as I have recently

Hello, as I have recently stated here before, I had surgery performed on July 28th of this year.  I had a disc herniation and spondylolisthesis at the L5 - S1 level.  I went ahead with surgery because I was sick of being in pain and tired of the pain medication.  For me, going for epidurals and facet block injections once a month combined with significant doses of medication for over a year and half was not the way I wanted to live.

I am a teacher so I had the summer off and the "time" to get it done and recover.  So, I elected to go ahead witht he surgery with the intention of being pain and med free a few months down the road.  The surgeon did a one level fusion at the level mentioned above.

I can only speak about my experience here.  The surgery was long, he did a anterior/posterior approach with a vascular surgeon on board, and the first few days were some of the most trying of my life.  I was in a lot of pain from the surgery itself, incisions plus implanted hardware meant some serious soreness and on top of all that, the anesthesia and intravenous hydromorphone they had me on made me quite sick and I was vomiting regularly fro the first 36 hours.  To put it simply, it was TERRIBLE!

As of today thouugh, the news gets better and I get better.  I can say honestly that all the pre-op pain is GONE!  My docotr encourages walking as it will help the fusion set and I am walking four miles day as of this week and it is doing wonders.  I have walked 16 miles so far this week over fours days!  It feels awesome.  I am sleeping better and throught the night restfully.

I am still a little sore in the front and back as there is much scar tissue inside and my muscles are adapting to the changes inside, but the procedure was a success nonetheless.  The fusion will still take some time to set but I have all the time in the world!  I can go back to work as my job does not require any heavy lifting or labor.

I am starting to feel normal again and have no restricting movements except I am not to twist or bend my back forward.  It has becaome routine now to avoid both.  I feel blessed that all aspects of life were condusive to my decision to have surgery.

I have an appintment with my pain doctor on Sept. 4th to come up with the prescribed plan to get me off my medication ASAP and be MED-FREE.

Now, this has only been my experience.  I am 28 years old and I was quite healthy going in.  I continue to focus on the right diet and exercise as permitted.  I am overjoyed that it was successful but I have to say I was nervous as hell going in.

I hope you find some relief in whatever road you take.  Good luck and it takes some serious "letting go," so to speak, to place your life in the hands of another.  Just know that they are skilled professionals but also understand that it is also a service industry at the same time.  I hope you doctor/surgeon provides the same care and sound judgement as mine did.  Be well.

disc

i also have 2 herniated discs in my neck, c4-c6, which are pressing on nervesin both my arms.  so if i turn my head, i hve shooting pain down my arm, which ever side i turn to, and then if i hold my head turned, mythumb and first 2 fingers go numb.  When it first happened, it was only the left side of my neck that hurt, i was stuck in a position where my head was bent to the side.  also i was having stabbing pains when i moved.

So after the mri, my doc sent me to a neuro like you said u are going to, and he suggested surgery first thing!  I was liek whoa buddy, i think ill try some other stuff first.   Anyways he will or should if hes a good dr, explain where it is and how its affecting you with a little model of the spine, so he can actually show you what is happening inside.

That is no good that your dr didnt give you anything else for pain.  you have an obvious injury, that i know from experience is VERY painful.  maybe the neuro will give you something, just tell him u are switching pcps which i would do anyways.  But good luck.

Here's a great website that explains things in layman's terms.
