is this the norm??I went to my first appt. at the pain clinic Fri. First I was given a drug screen(I guess they send it off to a lab because they didnt test it there). Then the physicians assistant comes in and takes a look at the meds I have been taking. Norco 10mg 4 per day, Neurontin 400mg 3 per day. I havent had any norco for a month because I have not seen the Dr that referred me to the PM in two months thus the script ran out a month ago. This Dr says she cant see me after referring me to PM. Anyway tha PA at the pain clinic comes in and we talk about my ankle and the MRI results and he tells me that I will have chronic pain for some time. Then he says that because the Norco worked well with the neurontin that they would have no problem keeping me on those meds. Then he says all we do an the first visit is a consultation and drug screen so you can go now and that he will tell the receptionist to get my next appt scheduled ASAP. Sorry so long. My questions are is it normal to not Rx on the first visit?? Is it normal to see tha PA insted of the Dr??? I dont have insurance and this visit cost me $360. Next appt is $80 and they did schedule it for 2 weeks from now instead of a month later. ( categories: Discussion of Prescription and OTC Meds )
I have to agree they are
I have to agree they are probably waiting to see the screening results first. As far as the PA goes, more DRs are using PA's and NP's (nurse practitioners) to help in the office. The pain clinic where I go they have 2 NPs that work the office while the Dr does procedures. He helps with the office when he is not doing procedures. However, you do have every right to see the Dr if you wish. You are paying the fee, you didn't say but I don't think they reduced it because it was a PA, I know mine is not for the NP. Honestly I prefer to see the NP, we just get along better, she gets me in and out quicker. She has also made it clear, no hard feelings, if I would rather see the Dr she would let him know and I could see him, I'm paying the fee. Just thought I would give you my experience. I would be upset!
If that happened to me I would be upset. I went to a brand new PM here in California because my company sent me here to work for a few months from Houston. The Doc went over my records (I gathered up all my records before I left) and RX'd me on the first visit. He even upgraded my Meds. If he had not RX'd me I would have gone into WD's and been in a MAJOR bind as I am working around new people who have no idea who I am. It would have been a nightmare and it could have ruined my career! A doctor is not obligated to
A doctor is not obligated to give you pills just because you were already on them. If you were changing docs you should have kept a couple extra just in case the doc didnt want to prescribe on the first visit like what happened here. also the original poster said they were off of the meds for a month or so before they even went to the new PM doc so they wouldnt have gone through withdrawals anyway. Clarification
All I am saying is that I find it unusual for a Doctor to not RX on the first visit. Espicially since there are current records available. I guess this is not the case in some areas. In Houston most Docs that I have seen will give you something even without records. I found the same to be true hee in CA. I am still
a little confused. The PA said "the norcos are working, and we have no problem keeping you on them". So why do you guys think they didn't Rx me something. One of the empty bottles I took to the appt was tramadol I got from a dr I saw in the month after my norco was gone. The only reason i could see
The only reason i could see is that they wanted to make sure you didnt have other drugs in your system like cocaine, marijuana, etc. Some PM clinics have very strict rules on their pain contracts and will stop treating you if you fail a random drug screen for anything other than what you are being prescribed. You would be surprised how many drug seekers they probably have to deal with who go in there saying they were on such and such med and want to get more yet have a whole bunch of other drugs in their system and the doc finds out they are just pill seeking. Also going in there with a tramadol bottle and asking for hydrocodone wasnt exactly the best idea unless you explained how you were off the norco for a month and the doc gave you this in the mean time. frkonaleash
I didn't go in there with a tramadol bottle and ask for norco. I had four bottles. three from the foot doc I saw that referred me to the PM.(two were for norco and one for neurontin. the other was for tramadol which I was Rxd in the hospital for four days for the flu and the dr gave me this for my foot when I left the hospital. I explained this to the PA at the PM clinic and he said that since the norco and neurontin were working that there would be no problem keeping me on them and then said the would get me back for my next appt soon since I didnt have any pain meds at the time. I just didnt understand why he didnt at least give me tramadol 'til my next appt. Most likely because tramadol
Most likely because tramadol is still abuseable so if he was to give you the tramadol he should have just given you the norco. Although i do find it curious why he didnt at least give you the neurontin as that is not a narcotic. Perhaps they just have some policy at their office about prescribing before the UA results come back Dont feel bad. My PM doc
Dont feel bad. My PM doc made me take a drug test which came out fine and sign a contract before I could be prescribed any kind of narcotic there. I have been a patient there for about 8 months. Ive been through loads of ultram, lots of procedures, injections, rhizotomy and I am still in severe pain, and he will still not prescribe me narcotics! Go figure! P.S. I know that ultram / tramadol has abuse potential, but I still cant figure out why. I take 400mg's per day and it doesnt make me high, sleepy, buzzed or anything. Not even pain free. In fact, I usually forget to take the prn doses for breakthrough pain cause they dont do a thing. Whats there to be addicted to, lol? |
