Pain after surgery

Last wednesday I was prescribed 30 5/325 percocets and before that i was prescribed 80 5/325 percocets.  I had shoulder surgery as you all should know and the 80 lasted me about two weeks.  I got a refill and the 30 will last me about 8 days.  I am taking less but still need them at night and in the morning.  My doctor seems cool and understanding but I've only known him for about a month.  Do you think he will get mad at me and maybe deny my request for a refill.  I mean theres no question I am going to call and request a refill because I need them at night to sleep.  My shoulder is still very stiff and sore and when I lay on my right side it is very uncomfortable.  My doctor knows this because I talked to him last week when I got my staple out.  I told him my pain dropped from a 9 on the second day after surgery to about a 6 or 7 now.  Dr lois I am not sure what type of doctor you are but is it normal for people after surgery to have pain for a month plus after surgery?  I start physical therapy on thursday and I'm sure i'll be sore afterwords.

If the doc went from 80 to

If the doc went from 80 to 30 pills chances are he is either going to deny your next request or give you another 30 or maybe less and thats if he is feeling nice. Perhaps your soreness and stiffness is due to lack of motion and perhaps once u start physical therapy then the pain will subside and go away. I would suggest asking for soemthing to take after the PT sessions not during. I learned the hard way that working out while on opiates leads to overstraining the muscles badly and thus even more pain and less motion ability so for after the session i would request them but i wouldnt take them before/during.

 percocet 5 x 4 a

percocet 5 x 4 a day...soma 3x daily at the time...my dead weight on the table for all that time was the problem...it was some rough surgery...anyone else have this bruising happen? i thought my ribs were broken, and it took many months for the soreness to leave.

Some people have a very high

Some people have a very high pain tolerance or bounce back from surgery quickly.  Others, not so fast.  Is your surgeon allowing you to take a NSAID like motrin or naprosyn.  Do not underestimate the amount of additional relief NSAIDs can provide.  Personally, I don't consider stiffness painful, and soreness connotes a type of discomfort that does not warrant a narcotic analgesic.  I would also suggest that if it hurts to lay on your left side avoid doing so!

Dr. lois when I say

Dr. lois when I say stiffness its not like a stiffness after a workout when your muscles are sore and you cant move them without pain.  This stiffness is stifff I mean limited range of motion and cannot move without sharp pain.  They had to detach my deltoid muscle then anchor it to my acromion with seamless stiches.  Its more indepth then just an arthroscopic shoulder surgery.  College just started again and I have a heavy bookbag and have to open doors with my right arm whuile my bookbag is on the left.  This is painful and creates "soarness" for lack of a better word. Excuse me if I didnt use specific terms you would denote for nacotic analgesics.  Maybe if I said extreme or maybe excruciating them maybe you would understand where I stand.   I'm not sure how you fall asleep but most people get tired with lying on one side for too long.  It is uncomfortable and virtually impossible for one to sleep on just one side of their body all night.  Besides when I sleep on my left side my arm still has to come across my body which is "uncomfortable" or "painful".  Maybe now you have a better understanding on why I am still on percocets. And to answer your question my doctor did not tell me to take motrin along with my oxy's but I took an 800 miligram yesurday to see if it would help and it only game me a headache.

Forgot to tell you guys that

Forgot to tell you guys that I called in to my orthopedics office and asked to get my percocets refilled.  The receptionists was like "alright I'll get that verified for you and you'll have to come in to get it".  20 minutes later she called back and said its ready and to come pick it up.  No hassels no questions just a good old refill.  Same count as before 30 and they are the watson percocets 5/325.  They are so cheap only 16.50 and my insurace paid 1.50.  My insurance is AETNA and it is really bad for prescriptions.

Because your husbands doctor

Because your husbands doctor was a jerk you think Im taking too many?  That really doesn't make much sense.  I take on average about 3-4 per day usually in the morning and at night when the pain is at its greatest.  I dont think my doctor is cutting me off because there was no hesitation in refilling my prescriptions two days ago and after I got my staples out.  My doctor trusts me and will refill the meds until my pain level subsides.  I do need to eventually get off the percocets but not while I still feel pain.  No sense in being in pain when your doctor is willing to refill my narcotics.  By the way do you mean that your husbands doctor was mean in that he didnt want to give your husband narcotics.  I wonder why?

I know the pain you

I know the pain you describe. I also had an in-depth surgery in 2001, yet I have pain, discomfort, stiffness, I have major trouble sleeping because one side hurts more than the other and then I switch and low and behold that side starts to hurt as well. 7 years have gone buy and I can say that all my symptoms have gotten worse. My right shoulder blade was the one that was broken, my left side hurts worse now due to the fact that I use it for EVERYTHING. Its a vicious cycle, I hope you find your relief.
