Anecdotal info only

I am not a medical person, so I don't know for sure.

But several times I read that Vicodin (5mg hydrocodone, 500mg APAP) got its name VI (for 6) and codin (for codeine) because hydrocodone is six times stronger than codeine.  We are excluding the APAP in the discussion and this is anecdotal info only!

So, if it's true, 5mg hydrocodone equals 30mg codeine (the amount of codeine in a T #3).

7.5mg hydrocodone equals 45mg codeine.  So 7.5mg hydrocodone is stronger.

Hope this helps, but remember I'm not a doc.  I'm only telling you what I read.

Thanks

Thanks, I'm a RN & I should know but I don't. My 18 y/o son sprain his ankle & foot severely & his Dr rx'd T#3 for his pain. My son has never had pain meds & T#3 was not touching the pain. A Relative gave him a few hydrocodone 7.5 which seemed to provide substantial relief. Thank you for the info.

It that true?

I'm a big fan of this site, and I check in a few times a week to see what I missed and I occasionally ask a question or "put my 2-cents in" as so many of us are fond of saying.  Anyway, it's a rainy dreary day here in Indiana, so I was bored and reading some of the older posts, and I came across this one.  Could you guys please read the below and tell me if this makes any sense or if there's any truth to this?  The poster says that Vicodin got its name from "VI" (Roman numeral 6) and "codin" from Codeine.  I know that hydrocodone IS 6 times stronger than codeine, but is the name origin thing a myth or is there any truth to it?  No reason really, just bored and interested to know....

If you checked the top of

If you checked the top of this forum, there's a opioid comparison chart that would have answered your question as well.

Hey Rawoody

Hey Rawoody, I acctually think she wanted to know if the whole thing about the origin of the name vicodin really did come from that break down of the word (vi) for 6 and codin for codein. she understands that the vicodin is 6 times stonger than codein.  I might not be making any sence but am I write original poster?  Read it carefully again rawoody and you'll see what I mean, if I am being stupid and wrong here, I apologize.

History

You are right Eagles.. That is what the poster was asking. I have searched for the history of vicodin and have found nothing on it to say that the VI is roman numerals and stands for 6. However if you think about it (and this is only my opinion) it really does make sense that it could be true. I would like to know if anyone can verify that now I am curious as well!!

Actually.....

Actually, I'm a "he" not a "she", but that's beside the point  :)  But Eagles and Danielle are both correct; I was just responding to an old post that I found, in which someone stated that the name origin of vicodin is from the "VI" for 6 and the "codin" from codeine.  It may be an irrelevant question, but it made perfect sense to me if it is true and it just peaked my curiosity.  I figured that someone on here may have heard something on that before.  Thanks for responding though guys (and gals ;)

Rawoody....

I too am a big fan of the Opioid Comparison Chart, and I reference it quite often to others.  I actually printed a copy to show a few friends and relatives of mine that are chronic pain sufferers.  But yeah, I knew that hydrocodone was 6x stronger than codeine; my question was whether the word origin for Vicodin that "ilovelife" presented held any truth.  It certainly would make sense, but then it could just be a myth.  But one that I've never heard before.
