Dilaudid 4mg vs. Percocet 10/325mg

Last week I was given an Rx for Percocet 10/325 #60 telling me to take two tablets every 8 hrs. The Percocet was making me itch badly so after much discussion of possible alternative narcotics, My M.D. and I decided on Dilaudid 4mg.

My question is, in potentcy, how does Dilaudid (hydromoprhone) compare to Oxycodone (Percocet)? I have been told by a less credible source that every mg of Dilaudid is equipotent to 2mg of Oxycodone, yet I was also informed that the are the same potentcy, mg for mg. What isd tyhe correct answer here? Is one stronger? How do the two relate to each other? I know that this site is not for professional advice yet I would appreciate any comments or insight greatly.

I look forward to informative responses.

Thanks

Discussion of RX and OTC Meds

We moved the question from the Pill Identification forum to Discussion of Prescription and OTC Meds.

General discussions about RX and OTC meds are permitted on Pharmer.org.  But please keep any discussions very general.   For example, it's fine to talk about personally experienced or published side effects of certain drugs, drug comparisons, general drug information, narcotic conversions etc.

Please do not give medical advice.  Don't tell a poster "Well, if 1 Percocet doesn't help your pain, take 2."  You should tell the poster to talk with his doctor and then maybe refer the poster to a credible consumer or technical info page that discusses dosages of that particular drug.  We have several websites listed in our Health, Drug Topics and More.

Please do not discuss the recreational use of drugs.

Thank you.

Discussion of RX and OTC Meds

A member brought this thread to my attention and asked who was giving medical advice.

Sorry, apparently I was not very clear.

There is nothing wrong with this thread.  JeckPDX's post asked a legitimate question, and phisher's reply that this board is for identification purposes only probably meant that the question is in the wrong forum.  So we moved the post to Discussion of Prescription and OTC Drugs.

At this time I took the opportunity to remind readers what topics are permissible.  There was no medical advice given in the first two posts and no talk of recreational drug use.  My post used these topics as examples of what types of discussion we don't want to see on the Pharmer.org website.

If anyone wants further clarification, please post or send me a private message.

One narcotic dosage

One narcotic dosage calculator shows 4mg of Dilaudid to be equivalent to 10.67mg Oxycodone. (going back the other way, 5mg Oxycodone equivalent to 1.88mg Hydromorphone)

So the person who said that 1mg Hydromorphone (Dilaudid) was roughly equal to 2mg Oxycodone wasn't that far off according to the calculator (1mg = 2.67mg)

A separate calculator I used through a subscription sevice showed 4mg Hydromorphone to be equivalent to 11mg Oxycodone.

Note: These calculations were made using a 0% reduction for cross tolerance. Equivalence will vary slightly from person to person based on the patients physical, medical, and Rx history. And were based on PO administration.

Thank you all for your interest in my post. I am well aware of the rules of he forum and in no way was giving medical advice or talking about recreational use. I have several broken ribs and a herniated disc in my back so narcotic use is completely legitimate for me. I am just curious as to how the Hydromorphone and oxycodone compare. I think it is about right that 1mg of hydromorphone + 2mg oxycodone, however I don't seem to get the same pain relief effect from the dilaudid 4 mg as i did with the 10mg percocet. That is why I asked the question at first. I though there might be misleading narcotic dosage converters online. Several pharmacists I have spoken with told me there is no real way to compare the two mg for mg because they are two completely diffferent opiates.

Thanks for the responses and sorry I originally posted in the wrong forum, completely unintentional
