Hydrocodone

Hi everyone. I was given Hydrocodone today by my dentist. I have never taken this as far as I know. However, I am allergic to codeine. I know that this does not contain codeine but was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible that I could be allergic to this also. Someone said that it is derived from codeine. Is that true and is the a possibility that if it is then I would also be allergic to the hydrocodone? I have severe breathing problems when I take codeine so I am waiting for a response from someone before i try it. Also I understand that no one can give me definite answer but I would welcome any opinion that anyone has. My pharmacy closed early today so I was unable to speak with the pharmacists. Thanks so much!

if you are allergic to one

if you are allergic to one you are probably allergic to the other.  I wouldn't advise taking it until you talk to a pharmacist, doctor or your dentist

Just speaking from

Just speaking from experience, but I am allergic to codeine as well, however; I take hydrocodone on a daily basis without any problems.  I think my "allergic reaction" was actually just a side effect due to the fact that I was only 12 when I had to take the codeine for an ear infection.  I'll let one of the better posters explain the differences between hydrocodone, and codeine, and the whole derivative process if they choose to.
