What is the half-life of benzodiazapines?  How long can xanax sit before it starts losing potency?

Are you referring to the

Half life generally refers to the bioavailability after the pill has been ingested, or how long the drug is available in the body/blood stream. Is this what you are wanting to know? Or the shelf life?

It sounds like you are talking about shelf life, if so then there really isn't a definite answer, but you will be interested in reading this post. It is asking about a different drug, but the answer applies to most meds.

If you are asking about the half life inside the body, then we need to know what drug you are asking about specifically. All benzodiazepines have different half lives. Example- Xanax is very short, where Klonopin is very long.

JUST SO YOU KNOW...

JUST SO YOU KNOW... "half-life"  is a term used to describe the latter, rather than the former (in the bloodstream rather than on the shelf)- I know more than i care to about all these drugs as have had seizure disorder and "rage issue" (intermitent explosive disorder) ever since severe industrial accd. w/brain injury-(I GET XANAX,VALIUM,CLONAZEPAM AND TEMAZEPAM PRESCRIBED MONTHLY TO USE AT MY DISCRESSION DEPENDING ON SITUATION, so as you can imagine, i have some meds w/serious shelf life issues-good storage-proper temp-etc.) anyway, back to the med-and your question- propper storage is 99% the issue here-my experience is that when stored correctly these meds last several years-but that's shelf life-half life is med in your body- the very reason that people have such addiction/abuse problems w/xanax is b/c it has a half life of 6 to 20 hours...this is why valium is used to wien (sp?) people off it, as valium has a half life of about 200 (yup, two-hundred) hrs...this means that the blood level falls by half in 8.3 days- this compared w/harshness of xani's mere hours-Other than that, i suppose it is just personal pref. but i can confirm that some are made to deteriorate quickly (even under tongue) and others have a sturdy exterior-this would dramatically affect shelf life-

well, just wanted that cleared up for you, i know we are not doctors on here, but i think we owe it to each other to share the knowledge we have on a specific topic or if terminology is used incorrectly-

ps-Ativan is 10-20 hrs and klono 18-50...
