What does it mean exactly when a pill is expired? Are the chemicals simply no longer potent or...?
We need to lay this question to rest.
Expiration date is an artificial date used by the pharm companies for guaranteeing the potency of a drug without having to subject the drug to additional testing.
Most well-compressed tablets stored in the correct environment will last a decade or more. The same is not true with liquids, some capsules and some particular meds such as many antibiotics and antivirals.
A study was done on the government stockpile, and the study found most of the pills were indeed effective and safe for human consumption 15 years after expiration.
As soon as I find the article, I will post it for you. And for everyone else who has the same question.
