Benadryl and VicodinHowdy all. I'm having a reaction to the generic (and name brand) Vicodin that I've been on for about a week, will be on it for about another 10 days or so depending on recovery...anyway, the issue is ITCHING! Never had that before, and I've taken vicodin and other pain/narcotics. The itching gets so bad that I've even broken skin and have scabs on my hands & arms. My doctor said that if I was going to be taking the pain medicine long term, he'd be more concerned, so for the next week or so, he wants me to take benadryl. Just see a pharmacist. I go see a pharmacist who doesn't really have too much info other than benadryl makes one sleepy ---so true! I am going back to see my doc on Fri. and we'll probably discuss this (and the pharmacist's lack of 'counselling') but I was wondering if you all had any comments/advice thoughts etc about taking these 2 medicines together. {FYI the benadryl is OTC, and I don't take it on an empty stomach, but I usually take the vicodin that way}. The itching is mostly relieved by the benadryl but it is hard to always be sleepy...something the vicodin really hasn't done. I don't think upping the narcotic is the way to go, though. I live in a small town in W.Va, and short of bothering my doc again, you all are my best resources. Thanks ( categories: Discussion of Prescription and OTC Meds )
that is a tough question.i
that is a tough question. i would say, "ask your doctor about switching pain meds" but like he said, since it is a short term thing then it probably isnt worth it. obviously, if you do have to go on pain meds for a while (more than 10 days) then you would want to avoid the hydrocodone products. However, if you are just going to try to manage the itching for the next few days then i would just stick with the benadryl as your doctor advised. the only other option that i can think of is to ask your pharmacists if there are any of the other OTC allergy meds that would not interact adversely with the vicodin. other than that i am not sure that there is much more than you are currently doing. good luck.
all thoughts and opinions expressed are those of my own and should not be mistaken for medical advice. i am not a doctor nor a pharmacist. all medical questions should be answered by a licensed pharmacist, doctor, or primary care manager. Taking benadryl and vicodin
Taking benadryl and vicodin at the same time has the potential to make you extremely sedated. Benadryl, is (obviously) an antihistamine. Antihistamines have been known to cause sedation. Couple that with a CNS depressant like Hydrocodone, and you've got the potential for an extremely lethargic day. I know that itching is a side effect of Vicodin, but I thought that was usually just in higher doses, so I'm not sure why you are having such a rough time. Gtrplayer You could try an OTC cream
You could try an OTC cream or gel to soothe the skin. Also, I find that percocet (or oxycodone products) dont make me itch as much as vicodin (or hydrocodone products) do. You might ask your doc about switching you to percocet, tylox, or another oxycodone med. Calamine lotion is also a good bet. Is your nose/face itching a lot in particular? This is very common, especially at high doses or doses over what it reccomended. I would ask about switching to percocet. Also, fentanyl (a much stronger narcotic) has no histamine reaction so it wont cause itching as a side affect. Same is true with tramadol (ultram, ultracet) although this is a much weaker painkiller and in non narcotic. It does not have a histamine reaction though. This is straight out of my doctors mouth for both fentanyl and tramadol. PDX I know what you mean
I have had the same experience!! All the itching and practically scratching till you bleed!! I think benadryl helps. There are also lots of other antihistamines out there though. Chlor-trimeton makes a 12 hour pill. It is extended release so you don't relly have to worry so much about getting knocked on your behind from the sedation. If I were you, I would tell the pharmacist exactly what you are doing with the antihistamines, maybe they could let you know of another type of antihistamine other than diphenhydramine. Might be worth a try. If the pharmacist doesn't get all snotty on you......just 2 cents Chlor-trimeton ?
Is Chlor-trimeton a generic name for the medicine you are talking about? I'll be so willing to give it a try! Really am tired of this sluggishness.
I'm curious about your comment about a pharmacist getting snotty??? What do you mean---is this something that gets abused, and the pharmacists are tired of people coming in off the streets to buy Chlor-trimeton ? There has to be a story behind THAT comment! not really
No the generic name for chlortrimeton is chlorpheniramine Maleate. Not aware of any abuse problems because of it's extended mechanism. I have talked to pharmacists and told them I was taking pain meds and trying to find something that wouldn't sedate me and keep the itching at bay. The guy looked at me like I was a freak. He just snottily told me that I was on my own because he didn't condone that sort of behavior. So now I don't use walgreens because of that jerk. I even told him that they were RXed to me. He was just an A**hole. But you find them everywhere. Good luck with the itchies. on my way to CVS
Thanks for the reply. So this chlorpheniramine Maleate, what mg is the OTC amount? Anybody know or is it just one dose for adults and different for kids? I like the idea of time release.
I take it that it was not (too) sedating. And I'm going to look for the cream mentioned. Wish me luck everybody!
Makes me think about the Benadryl, though...I'm amazed that more people don't abuse it, it is incredibly sleep~inducing. Some people, if they take
Some people, if they take Benadryl ALL the time (for allergies) become used to the medication and it doesn't keep them drowsy all the time. Benadryl can also cause excitability, believe it or not. I've had that happen, although usually it is more common if you also have restless-leg syndrome. Yes, benadryl as a sleep aid is 'abused' to the extent that some people 'learn' that they can't fall asleep without it. But since you usually don't need higher doses of benadryl over time to get to sleep, it isn't really considered a big problem. Benadryl is one of those drugs that many OB-GYNs will allow a pregnant woman to take if she has allergies, so in appropriate doses it likely does little damage to your body. I think, when they hire pharmacists for Walgreen's, that they must screen them to find pompous, 'I-know-better-than-you-OR-your-doctor-what-medications-you-should-take' types who categorize anyone who comes in to fill more than 10 Vicodin as drug-addicted. Can you imagine what the company policy book reads? Maybe 'Anyone who fills any prescription for a controlled substance must be treated like a criminal. Make sure that you personally discourage their prescription-filling behavior.' Many narcotics release
Many narcotics release histamine into the system, but it's much more common with IV forms than pill forms. Unfortunately, taking Benadryl sometimes takes getting used to to not make you sleepy.
I have to fight sometimes in the hospital because Dilaudid is the best pain med for me, but I do get itchy after the first dose, and sometimes they want to try to switch me to somethign else, (Morphine makes me break out in hives, Demerol doesn't do squat), so I finally get them to agree to the 25mg of Benadryl.... |
