Skelaxin on its own should not cause drowsiness.

I have used it and there was very mild sedation, but not very helpful for the pain I was in. I also tried flexaril which I think was a bit stronger, again not much help. Soma was the one that really helped me, although there was a bit more sedation affect. I tended to use it only before I went to bed and I would give it a thumbs up. But for the rest of them, you just need to try for yourself because every med acts differently on each person. What may work great for me may be no good for you.

Was prescribed oxycodon-APAP 10-325 #30, along with skelaxin 800mg #30 with three refills. I started the prescription of skelaxin today and have not felt too sedated but a little drowsy. As far as the pain he mentioned the oxycodone was a temporary thing(used the bandaid metaphor), and my doctor also mentioned the skelaxin would be used for the muscles not the pain.

I received a shot yesterday, a prescription for prednisone 10mg 4 a day for 5 days, along witht he oxycodone. I also have 6 weeks of physical therapy starting next week. Does this treatment sound familiar to anyone?

I have an MRI on Tuesday, butt the doc says it is a herniated disc. First time with any back problems/injuries. I am 27. Don't know what the future holds, I hope it gets better and don't want to be on meds for too long.  Thanks for the responses thus far.

2 weeks ago i had a 3 tier cervical spinal fusion- my back & shoulder area were in alot of pain(still are) i was prescribed skelaxin and i for me personally do not think it did any good.it upset my stomach & i was nauseus. so then i was given robaxin did not create the stomach problems but it didn't really help either.i can not take any nsaids, unfortunately due to the fact it interferes with the bone fusion. blueangel

I was prescribed Skelaxin for muscle spasms. I have Ankylosing Spondylitis (a rheumatic disease)and get very painful muscle spasms. I found them to be mild and not very helpful in offering any relief  for that.  My prescribed dosage was one 800mg tablet  4 X a day.

I have had this medication prescribed to me, i found it not to be very helpful for muscle post op surgery.i have taken soma & yes it is probably the best for me in regards to muscle problems.it is to sedating & i know a woman that is so addicted to this stuff-she unfortunately orders from online pharmacies and goes through 3-90 bottles a week. it is her master & she can't break away from this stuff. she has injured herself so many times it is so pitiful. it is owns her. i won't take it, because of what i have seen.i am glad to see it  is a CIV . the skelatin really upsets my stomach gas wise. so i don't take any of it - i agree with one of the posters that diazapan helps, when i had 3 surgeries to my neck 4/6/07-to 6/28/07 that was of help. this is a personal experiance i am not a person of medical or pharmacutical education. hopes this helps someone-thanks blueangel

Instead of seeing a regular doctor, have you tried a pain specialist?  They are much more helpful and understanding that you have pain. A lot of regular doctors will try to give you tremadol, or skelxin, or neurontin. NONE of THOSE work at all. Well, as least for me or anyone else I knew who had taken them.   ( pardon me on my spelling of the meds, I know its wrong, but you get the idea) 

Working in a pharmacy myself, and having tried Skelaxin for my spasmodic muscles, I've found that it did not much assist in relief for my pains, and that carisoprodol is far more helpful, albeit, as the poster before me mentioned, tends to make me a bit more drowsy (it actually makes me more drowsy than tizanidine, myself!). I don't see Skelaxin RXed much in my pharmacy, but everyone's body is different. I'd suggest keeping on top of progress made (a daily journal of effects isn't a bad idea either -- can you tell I'm studying to become a doctor? haha) in order to report back to your prescribing MD about the ways in which this medication helps or does not.

I have likely tried most muscle relaxants on the market, and today I have settled with Soma (not the compound though with aspirin, the codeine compound may be another story) and Valium as well, though I am considering consulting my physician about lorazepam for my anxiety and crazy spasms (which as a neuropsych student believe are psychosomatically related).

In any case, your mileage may vary, as they say. Give it a go and if it doesn't work, maybe with that journal suggestion you can outline exactly or near exactly what went right and what went wrong.

Its actually kinda dumb that Carisoprodol was never a controlled drug from the start. Carisoprodol (Soma) is metabolised in Meprobromate (Miltown) which is a CIV.

I have been on lyrica and skelaxin and neither one did anything for me. Lyrica put me to sleep and that was about it.The only thing that really has helped my pain is the xodol. That is a pain pill not a muscle relaxer though. I recently switched to norco, but I got bad headaches from that so I switched back to Xodol.
