nortriptyline / pamelor?Hello All, Just some very basic questions here. I have been prescribed this medication to help with migraine and anxiety control. I was actually given it on 4/22/07 but have been terrified to take it because it is an anti-depressant and I am a stay at home dad and I watch court tv and I have seen the cases where the moms have lost it and blame the meds...
Well this is supposed to be low dose @ 75mg once I step up after 3 weeks 25mg at night for the first week, 50mg at night for the 2nd week and then 75mg each week there after. I am not asking for advice but for experience, if anyone out there is taking this or some other tri-cyclic like it for migraine/anxiety or chronic pain. What kind of mood effect can I expect?
Thanks in advance, Brian
p.s. I took my first one tonight ( categories: Discussion of Prescription and OTC Meds )
I love court TV. If you
I love court TV. If you aren't crazy already, anti-depressantsl won't make you crazy. (the exception is that sometimes antidepressants can precipitate manic behavior in people with bipolar disorder). Nortriptylline is commonly used for chronic nerve pain, migraine prevention, and certain bladder problems (interstitial cystitis) as well as depression and post traumatic stress disorder. The most common side effect seems to be sleepiness, but if you are just using it once at night, that can be a good thing. The usual dosage is anywhere from 10 mg a day to 150 mg a day. If your doctor has suggested it, don't be afraid to try it and give it at least 6-8 weeks to work. Thank you Doc
Thank you do for for the answer. I will certianly be taking it for at least 8 weeks. I need to try my best to get through this tough time and see how this works out. Hopefully it helps with pain and migraine and stress as well.
Any one out there with experience taking this med, please feel free to chime in. Anti depressants-Marketing or Magic?
My wife was prescribed an anti depressant that did help her migraines, after some time on them. She seemed to have no real problems. She also suffers from anxiety and the AD was supposed to have served a dual role there. She still has anxiety, but the migraines are gone, except for rare occurences. She does not take the ADs anymore. thelifeline
