Klonopin vs. XanaxHello everyone, I have recently started taking xanax for panic attacks, and so far it helps a little.
Can someone tell me what the differences between Xanax and Klonopin are? Someone told me that Klonopin was much better, or more effective.
Thanks. ( categories: Discussion of Prescription and OTC Meds )
Clonazepam and xanax are
Clonazepam and xanax are both benzodiazapines. Klonopin is said to be approx. half the strengh of xanax. However, klonopin lasts longer and is metabolized slower in the body. Klonopin is directed in the use of seizure disorders and panic attacks. I actually saw a doctor today that believes klonopin is much safer and better for you than xanax. Xanax is not so much prescribed for seizure disorders, just anxiety and panic attacks. So the two drugs are similar but klonopin has a slower onset of action but lasts longer-almost like an extended release med. Xanax IR has a quick onset but doesn't last as long unless you take the CR formula (which has a slower onset). Both effect GABA, a neurotransmitter associated with inhibition. Check with a liscensed MD before you take any suggestions! The main reason is the
The main reason is the slower onset which causes less euphoria or a high. As I said klonopin is more like an extended release med whereas xanax has a quick onset. Xanax CR has been found to have less severe side effects as Xanax and they don't make a klonopin CR. Klonopin can be abused but isn't abused nearly as much as xanax. Both can cause memory impairment but I would say xanax is more severe. You really would want to talk to your doctor about this, but klonopin has less severe side effects as far as I know. Check with a liscensed MD before you take any suggestions! I agree with your doctor
I agree with your doctor that klonapin is 'safer' than xanax. Klonapin seems to be abused less. Because klonapin has a slower onset of action and a more sustained effect you don't have the same rapid relief from anxiety that can lead to overuse of Xanax. Similar to why sustained release narcotics are 'safer' than immediate release. I would have to say that ER
I would have to say that ER narcotics are more likely to be abused than IR narcotics. When taken properly both should be equally as safe, actually IR meds would be safer because they are low dose and do not usually cause accidental overdose. ER meds are for people with opiate tolerance and are much more dangerous because a lot of people don't know about the medicines. Check with a liscensed MD before you take any suggestions! A handful of Roxicodone is
A handful of Roxicodone is just as bad as a crushed Oxycontin. The trick is to make sustained release products impossible to adulterate. Lower doses of extended release medications are appropriate for people who are not narcotic resistant, but will need pain management for a longer period of time. Immediately acting medications, benzodiazapines or narcotics, usually have a more intense although short lived effect compared to longer acting medications. Attempting to maintain the short lived intense effect leads to more frequent use and more rapid escalation of dosage. Have you used both Xanax and
Have you used both Xanax and Klonapin? Xanax, like a rapid onset narcotic, gives more of a distinct rush or buzz that is faster in onset and more intense than Klonapin. I have taken Xanax, but I have never taken Klonapin, so I am basing this description on how patients say they feel when they get switched from Xanax to Klonapin. Most of them don't like the switch because they "cannot feel the drug working". I agree completely that all the benzodiazapines can be and are abused. I agree. Immediate Release
I agree. Immediate Release meds are more addictive, as are those with a quicker onset, and shorter duration. One of the main factors taken into consideration when measuring abuse potential is how quickly the effect is felt. faster onset = greater reinforcement. The duration of action is also factored. One might think that a drug with a more prolonged effect would be more abusable, since the "high" lasts longer, but there is a far greater reinforcement potential when a drug needs to be administer 4-6x per day compared to 1-2. And when considering safety between IR and ER meds, you cant assume abuse of either. For instance, you cant say that "a crushed Oxycontin is more dangerous" when factoring safety, because clinicians have to assume that the medication will be taken as prescribed. Obviously a crushed 80mg OC is more dangerous than a few percocet, but you have to assume compliance. If every doctor thought that every IR/ER narcotic/benzo/stimulant thay rx'd would be abused, they would never rx them in the first place. xanax vs klonopin
I have taken both the clonazepam (klonopin) and alprazolam (xanax). Awhile back my doctor switched me from xanax to the klonopin, the only difference I saw was the xanax work faster, other than that, they had the same effect. My doctor said the klonopin is a long-acting compared to the short-acting (cant remember exact terminology). I was getting 120 xanax/month, then got switched to klonopin, in the same amount, same doage, 1mg. I felt the same relief when taken as prescribed on both. I was just so used to seeing them "blue footballs" or the "totem poles", "bars", it seemed as though if the klonopin were the same shape and color, no one would probably know. Maybe so tho, cause it does seem that xanax are more "tranquilizing" than the klonopin. He then switched me back to xanax, for unknown reasons to me. He took me to 2mg though. I asked about the XRs, but he seemed that wouldnt be a good option (for me) though. I am not the doctor, so I dont know the reasoning behind that, but I am sure it is good decision.
---------------------------------------- KnightMetal I am not an MD. I know by experience only. I would have to disagree
I would have to disagree about the abuse of Klonopin. Where I live (Detroit area) Klonopin is fastly taking over the number one spot for the most sought after benzo. Anyone I talk to that I know is a Xanax abuser is actively seeking Klonopin on the streets and from docs. I dont think doctors are just yet aware that people are abusing them so much, because they used to be reserved for seizures and severe anxiety and not just generalized anxiety. I am surprised to hear
I am surprised to hear this. The number of tablets dispensed for a patient on klonapin is usually 60 (bid dosing), whereas Xanax is 120 or more (qid dosing + prn). I would have thought more product = more sales. I can understand the shift in demand from Xanax to Klonapin because of increasing resistance to prescribing Xanax for chronic anxiety disorders. klnnopin dose
I was getting them 4 x a day 1 in the morning, 1 around 4pm and 2 at bedtime. I had/have nothing bad to say about them, as they did work at they were supposed to. It is my understanding that xanax is classified as a Tranquilizer or hypnotic, as klonopin is not.(do not quote me) I might be wrong, I am not a medical pofessional, just an educated consumer. I have tried Ativan and Valium, neither one of those seemed to work for me. Although my wife takes Ativan and they work for her. The MD told me if I for some reason have a panic attack, to let a xanax dissolve between my tongue and lower mouth. Man I am glad I have never had to do that! I have tried it, just to be prepared, but them things arent meant to be tasted thats for sure. As the klonopin I could, almost no taste at all. (for me anyway) As far as the Klonopin being saught for, I agree, they are just like the xanax in that regard.
---------------------------------------------- KnightMetal I am not an MD. I know by experience only. C "Klonopin" vs Xanax, other Benzos, etc.
As I've read in a good many posts here by now, the above post makes very good sense. I was in Detox/Rehab Clinic for Opiate PKs a while back (for a disc injury), and there got to witness most all other chem dependency meds. Here is the difference, in a Clinic environs: Many Users were seriously addicted to Clonazepam, and required detox/rehab very much like my opiate process (I used Suboxone for the opiate detox). For Clonipin users, they used Phenobarbitol for the detox/rehab process, and the users were in rather bad shape while kicking Clonopin, they were as bad as I was in my serious opiate withdrawal. I could hardly believe it, but there it is: Clonopin can be seriously addictive, and highly unpleasant to kick. Xanax (alprazolam), OTOH, is not treated at all at this "serious dependency" Clinic - it evidently does not have the addictive components of Clonopin, and having been on Xanax for anxiety myself, I can see the point. Xanax is not great fun to take, all in all, it just does a needed job fairly well. A related "in-between" third drug, mostly out of medical favor for legal & other reasons, but still around, is Halcion (triazolam). This med seems to walk a nice line between the above two, if you can get it. Smoother than Xanax, and less-addictive than Clonopin - IF you can get any. I use Xanax mainly, for anxiety, and an occasional Halcion (better for sleeping) when I can get them. My shrink has no objection to Halcion use, but for legal reasons will not prescribe it himself. Right now, with an acute insomnia/anxiety problem, I'm on a newfangled "cumulative plasma drug" called Lexipro (10mg). It nicely helps my overall anxiety, but is no help sleeping. I've been through at least 10-12 "direct" sleep aids (Ambien, Lunesta...) and "indirect" (that is, primarily meant for Psychosis, Depression, etc.), meds (like Soraquel, Remeron et al). These "indirects" can have terrible & dangerous side-effects, and I speak from emergency room visits. Use extreme caution with Indirects for sleep, and avoid completely if possible, both me and my shrink now agree, at least in my case. Anyway, here's a question: I just got some Luminal (barbituate) to try for insomnia, 30mg tabs. I guess I'll make the leap & try one tonight, though I'm a little concerned, after all I've heard about Reds' and Yellows' abuse in the past. We'll see, I guess. Any experiences with Luminal out there? xanax vs. klonopin
xanax & klonopin. they are both benzos and very similar in every way. as far as which is "better"- thats a matter of opinion. basically xanax you can pop if you feel a panic attack coming on... while klonopin generally is taken, for example, once every morning to help in preventing the possibility of a panic attack from even coming on in the first place. In my area Klonopin is very
In my area Klonopin is very quickly becoming the most looked for benzo out on the streets. The only differences i have ever noticed between the two is in the onset and the duration and slight differences in the amnesia associated with benzos. As previously stated clonazepam will last longer and have a slower onset than alprazolam. I can easily see how a doctor would prescribe the xanax for sudden anxiety or panic attacks and the klonopin to be taken once or twice a day as a preventative measure. I know if I were to feel the onset of an anxiety attack I would rather have an alprazolam over a clonazepam dose just because the differences in the onset of the pill however I am not a doctor so take this just as advice. I can tell you FOR SURE
I can tell you FOR SURE Xanax works faster (that instant calm feeling) when taken, rather than Klonopin. I use to take 1mg Xanax 3 times daily then was switched to Klonopin .05mg twice daily. Klonopin defiantly doesnt act as FAST, but does give a little, instant calm. Absolutely it works better for me as I have somewhat of an addictive personality and it workds great for my Social Anxiety/Phobia and Panic Disorder. Klonopin is the way to go in my case.
DonMarco™ (edited by TeamPharmer) i told MD
I told my MD that Klonopin were working fine for me, but he said he wants me to take Xanax. It really doesnt matter to me, but to him it does I suppose.

VERSED & FENTANYL
"Midazolam otherwise known as Versed is the strongest benzo that I am aware of." Ok, that was one med that my MD told me NOT to take while on the Fentanyl patch. Ive never even seen a tablet, or had it prescribed as an IV. Must be some powerful stuff.

2 cents
around here aka dc, klonopin is king, its cheaper, and easier to get in 2mg doses, as for potency, all over the web they say xanax is stronger, others however say they are the same mg to mg, personally, and with agreement of alot of people people I find klonopin to be a more mood lifting drug, where xanax seems to be a knock out, i guess due to its oncet time as for midazolam, otherwise known as dormicum, that stuff is only dispensed at hospitals pre surgery, as for what I hear from the junkies around here that tried it, it either knocks you out, or does nothing at all powerful... yes... not very abusable, in a sense that, would you abuse taking a nap? I consider taking benzos
I consider taking benzos even a severe one to induce sleep still abuse. I know because i have been there. You are still taking an illicit drug to produce an effect. whether its xanax or klonopin for stress relief or midazolam(never taken) or seroquil(yes not a benzo but i have taken it to help me get to sleep) to help you get to sleep or pain killers to make you feel better/euphoria. Its all abuse unless a doctor prescribes the pills. And I just wanted to mention that stimulant addicts aka methamphetamine or coke/crack would love something to help them go to sleep after a binge and that would also be a incident of abuse. nap?
My favorite sleep medication is Secanol. It does just that - puts me to Sleep. I have also used Soma for sleep and benzos. I've tried Lunesta, and they do NOTHING. Ambien is the same way. If I have to sleep, secanol does it EVERYtime. While somas make you feel kinda drunk, then go to sleep.

I have nothing further to add to my comment above to the OP. I would just like to add a little tid bit about Versed. I have no idea if its "the strongest" benzodiazepine, I do know I got an injection of it when I had a chest tube inserted for a collapsed lung. Instead of making me all calm and happy it made me super paranoid. I was kinda freaking out for the first few minutes anxiety/panic attack. I thought the ceiling was dirty and the dirt in the air was going to get into the hole for the chest tube. I was so amped up, the ER suregeon and his nurse guy where laughing at me. But about 7-10 minutes after it kicked in I was pretty calm. I think I wouldve done better if the gave me xanax or valium. For the last 3 years I thought it was Ativan they gave me, but last night I read over the reports from the hospital. Long story short, in my book, Versed is not that great. ativan
Yeah, dont know what the deal is with Ativan, but they give me a panic attack and/or make me really paranoid, like I just took a hit of some illicit drug. Those things do not go good in me. My wife takes them, with no problems, but not me.

None of these newer sleep meds work for me. Ambien-nothing. Lunestar keep waking up, Ambien CR keep waking up. Even Temazopam, which a particular doc (not my regular PCP) said was very strong, does not keep me asleep. I did wake up choking on temazopam so I fear and respect it a bit. I take Xanax to sleep, usually 2, sometimes 1 ea. .5 at bedtime. Even that does not work that well, but it works better than all these new things that are on the TV commercials. I'd like to talk with my doc about getting just a few secanols so that I can get just a few nights that include the deep restful sleep. I dream all night, because I don't get past dream sleep into the deeper more restful stage.....It would be so cool just to sleep one full night, without waking up 6 times.....It's been this way for literally years. Thanks for reminding me of the secanol. I got 1 ea prescribed for me before my carotid tumor surgery in 1987 and it put me out. I am going to ask doc for a few, just a few, to break the restless cycle. Sorry but I don't know the answer to your question. I've never heard of that other benzo, Midazolam. thelifeline secanol
"Thanks for reminding me of the secanol. I got 1 ea prescribed for me before my carotid tumor surgery in 1987 and it put me out. I am going to ask doc for a few, just a few, to break the restless cycle."
no problem, these are the only sleep med that work for me. and they work REALLY good! They are usually hard to get, they want to give you the ones that do not work (like always). The only thing is that when you take it, you had better be ready to sleep, because it is almost impossible to fight it if something comes up.
_____________________________ KnightMetal I am not an MD. I know by experience only. Consult YOUR MD 1st! Versed and Fentyl
I am a SEVERE dentalphobic so my densist gives me an injection of fentynl and versed before major procedures. I know why your doctor said don't mix them. They have an anethesiologist monitoring me during the procedure because the pharacological effects are more pronounced that what I suspect heroin is like. I'm in the midst of several spaced out procedures. Next month is the 4th of 6. (wisdom teeth, several implants, bone grafts, you get the picture). Last time I decided to see how long I could fight the onset of sedation and basically being plastered beyond the capacity to function. I lasted 15 minutes. What's worse if that you experience anterograde amnesia (don't remember ANYTHING while high on this stuff) so they were ripping away at my mouth and I don't remember a darn thing. The combination gets you SOOO intoxicated that you require competent medical professionals to obeserve you while under it's spell. You'd have to be a fool to take them together on your own. mixing meds
I do know that mixing Somas with Xanax (or Klonopin) isnt a very smart thing to do. If you are not familiar with what they will do anyway. It straight up KNOCKS ME OUT for atleast 3 or more hours. I am just not talking about just 1 soma 350 and 1 xanax 2mg. More like 2 or more of each. I woud not suggest that any1 do this. Although I did it on accident, then I was using it for sleep. It can be a deadly combo if you take even more. ______________________________ KnightMetal I am not an MD. I know by experience only. Consult YOUR MD 1st! Benzos and Percocets
Another combination that I would advise refraining from is valium and percocet. I herniated my L5-S1 disc in my lower back, and suffered concommitent sciatica (awful shooting pain down the back of the leg). I needed the assistance of two friends to bring me to the MD's office for evaluation and a subsequent MRI. MY PMD prescribe Valium 10 mg QD and Percocet 7.5mg/325 mg APAP TID. Now I've never had an addictive personality. I rarely consume alcohol and even then only moderately enjoy the effects. But the high associated with this "cocktail" scared me. It made me feel that their was heaven on earth, that peace had arrived. And that life was one comfortable nap in bed, for days. I faithfully used up every pill and thank God there was no reason to indicate a refill or I'd have gladly taken them. I advise staying away from this combination. It is too "feel good" for even a normally non-addictive type to resist. Really. Ask for an alternative. benzos
I havent had that reaction. I have taken the valium w/ oxys b4 and didnt have a problem. It just shows that every1 is different and everyone has reactions totally different from others, good or bad.

Hello everyone, It's amazing how many of you post your "opinions." And that's all they are really. That's why I don't like the forum world. There's so many conflicting opinions. I have about 4 years experience working in both a hospital pharmacy and a retail pharmacy. I live in the metro Detroit area. First of all alprazolam (Xanax) is STILL one of the TOP grossing generics. I forget how far clonazepam (Klonopin) is down the list currently, but it's not poised to overtake alprazolam. Alprazolam is prescribed all the time for GAD (I think a bit too much). I think clonazepam is the drug of choice for panic attacks and bigger anxiety problems. Second Versed is what nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologists use to predmedicate for surgery. They don't use Valium or Xanax. It's just not done. I know because I shadowed a Nurse Anesthetist for about a year and in a few years I'll be one myself. The operating room is a completely different world from the retail pharmacy. The two don't align that often. You can't compare the two or assume the same drugs are preferred. OK there's my two cents. -K Even atcual REAL licensed
Even atcual REAL licensed MEDICAL DOCTORs have opinions. On what they think works best, what doesnt, what SHOULD and SHOULD NOT be taken 2gether. Everyone is different, while one medicine might work for some - it doesnt work for ALL. So, we are left with an "opinion". I have been to my fair share of Medical Doctors and know this is the truth. I think its also amazing how Doctors can disagree so much on a certain medicine and/or technique or care. >> "It's amazing how many of you post your "opinions." And that's all they are really. That's why I don't like the forum world. There's so many conflicting opinions." I have also seen pharmacists with totally different "opinions". Dont take my message the wrong way, I like the others here respect YOUR opinion. While there there be certain proceedures that every doctor agrees on, there are alot of other that they DISagree with also. Most people dont trust just 1 doctors "opinion" or "diagnosis", they often get 2 or MORE opinions before they take an "opinion" into consideration. SO many times I have seen where a doctors "advice" or "opinion" was the totally WRONG advice. I have seen this on a personal level as well, so I do know it exists.

It is usually prescribed for anxiety, but it works to help me sleep........ I understand, being the professional that you are why you are "not convinced" about online forums. I am not doubting your qualifications but as has been said even medical professionals have their preferences and some do not like to use Valium or Xanax for Pre-Anesthesia. However, I too have observed and shadowed numerous surgical procedures where Versed (Midazolam) was not used, Valium was. I have also had surgical procedures as well as my wife where Valium was used.
Am I becoming a druggie?
Hi all, I have been on and off benzos for the past 10 years (at least). The last few months my panic/anxiety level have been crazy. I was on 3mg of Klonopin for about a year, and then 1 month ago my doctor switched me to xanax. Anyways...... I am now up to 3mg Xanax XR (1.5 in morning and evening) and another 2 (or so!) mg of Xanax regular. Today the anxiety was so bad I also took 1mg Klonopin along with the Xanax.... Anyone ever mix benzos before? I also to 50mg Serequol last night and it let me sleep about 4 hours... :) Yeah, I know I need to see a doctor, problem is that mine is ill (no replacement) and I am trying to get an appointment in a community clinic - I am not into abusing meds, but you know, the anxiety is unbearable. Before I answer this
Before I answer this question I just want to say that this post should have been closed a long time ago but anyway...... Only you can say if you are a druggie. Do you abuse drugs? Take them without prescripts or more than prescribed? Yes I have mixed xanax and clonazepam. At the dose of xanax you take plus the klon, if you are still having unbearable anxiety you might need to re evaluate your options. You say you take 1.5 3mg xr 2x daily, XR pills specifically say not to break, cut, chew, crush etc. As a person who has had experience with benzo abuse I would say you have some problems. I will also say that tolerance builds so quickly that taking 2mg is like taking 10mg once you have tolerance to the dose. I would be careful with these drugs they can be quite dangerous and have deadly withdrawal effects. I don't know what else to say except I don't know if I would call you a Druggie but you def. have some issues that need medical help and counseling. Good luck Check with a licensed MD before you take any suggestions! doc

It is hard to say, some say
It is hard to say, some say it is equal, some say xanax is 2x stronger and some say clon is 2x stronger. So it is really up to debate, it is really hard to compare since they are very different even thought they are both benzos. Check with a licensed MD before you take any suggestions! Klonopin v Xanax
I am currently on a script of 3mg Xanax daily and find it a great preventative. Your body gets used to it. As for clonazepam (I think 'KLONOPIN' is a USA-only brand; everywhere else it's RIVOTRIL, made by Roche and also under the same name by Galenika) I find that 4mg taken sublingually (you can gauge freshness by the strength of the 'minty' taste of it) is very fast-acting and long acting, though nowhere nearly as long-acting as things like diazepam, nordazepam, prazepam etc. Exceedingly useful for actually DURING an attack. Don Marco, that's some pill-splitter you own. Here in UK, the lowest dosage tablet of Rivotril is 500mcg, ie 0,5mg. You appear to be using one-tenth of that, 0,05mg or 50mcg. That wouldn't sedate a baby mouse! I think you have your decimal point in the wrong place. It is recommended to all doctors to use microgrammes for any tablet under 1mg, officially. You would not have made that obvious mistake if you had given your dosage in mcg. Now what is 'VERSED'? Some kind of injectable midazolam by the sound of the post. I would consider that very dangerous and have no idea why it is on the market. It's something which should be reserved for supervised hospital use only. Here we have Roche DORMICUM, available in 7,5mg and 15mg tabs, and Galenika FLORMIDAL, in 15mg only. However I usually split a Flormidal to give two 7,5mg doses, that's usually enough. And I make sure I'm already IN BED before ingesting; it's very fast-acting and similar to the old-style barbiturates like seco- and amylo-barbital. Sledgehammer stuff. I do return to the doctor every now and then to get a change for a week or two back to my old script of 1 or 2mg Roche ROHYPNOL (flunitrazepam) because of tolerance issues. I changed because I found Rohypnol was affecting me next day in a way that midazolam does not. And I recommend that people avoid the 'Z' drugs, especially zolpidem, which has horrific side-effects like hallucination, ataxia next day, and schizophrenic-type symptoms. WHY on earth is it so popular, then? It also builds tolerance very fast. Brand-name is normally STILNOCT but I believe that, again US-only, it can be known as AMBIEN. Also available as SOMIT by Gador. 5 or 10mg dosages. NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL! "NEVER ingest anything unless you are 100% sure what it is." |
