Alternatives to methadone?

Submitted by obscure gurl on May 12, 2008 - 9:12pm.

I have been with my pain mgmt. dr. for 6 1/2 years and this past year they have convinced me to take methadone when the hydrocodone stopped being effective. Now I definatly want off of the methadone but I still need an "extended release" painkiller to take its place. Any ideas on alternative medication that is just as effective as methadone??

Submitted by rachels7118 on May 12, 2008 - 12:39am.

I have been diagnosed recently with 2 bulging discs, 1 internally ruptered disc, spondylosis, and spondylolytheses. I have been on Vicodin ES 4 two years it is not as effective as it used to be and I am going to a new doc due to insurance coverage. What do I do if they take me off of it? I wouldnt mind switching to something else but what do I do if they try to cut me off?

am i crazy?

Submitted by V69 on May 9, 2008 - 3:16pm.

My history is a long one to say the least. I have had several addictions and would say that I have an "addictive personality". My most recent struggle though is odd. I was seeing a pyshciatrist for nervous tension and anxiety. I explained to him that I had been experiencing shaking when I wake up of a morning. He prescribed me librium which without reading or researching, I didn't know that you could develop a dependency to it as well. I assume this doctor didn't believe me when I told him I was clean from drugs (narcotics) and that I drank but was not an alcoholic. A close friend told me that she was prescribed librium to stop drinking once in a rehab facility. I guess my question is why am I shaking is it withdrawal or maybe a health problem? I am currently not taking the librium so that is why I think maybe it is withdrawal from it. So am I crazy? I was better off before I walked in his office.....even dealing with struggles from addictions I already had. If anyone has experienced this shaking or can give me any advice please. My husband is deployed and I am totally responsible for our 2 children. I have no family support and just want some advice or maybe just someone who can relate. The shaking comes from nowhere and mostly affects me in the morning when I first wake. The librium did help when I was taking it but I am currently out and really don't want to take anyhting that I can develop or am already dependant upon. I am currently clean and drink to try and cope with my nervous anxiety which I don't like cause like I said I don't know if substituting one thing for another is a solution. Any help or suggestions are welcome and can someone please confirm what the drug librium is actually used for.

Questions about increasing Methadone.

Submitted by livnlearn on May 8, 2008 - 6:02pm.

I take 30mg. of Methdone per day 3-10mg.  I have been using this since last August for chronic headaches and migranes due to head trauma.  Over the past couple month my dosage has become less effective.  When I have talked to my Dr. about it she seems reluctant to increase my dosage. I started with 30mg and have stayed with the same dose and have never increased or decreased.  I have taken pain medication for over 6 years with this condition.  I did become addicted to opiates and had to quit completely. The pain specialist decided that methadone was my best choice, it keeps me off  opiods and takes care of my pain. I see my Dr. once a month and she gives me a script for 90 pills, it is then up to me to regulate these so they last all month, I usually do pretty well, but it is getting more and more difficult since the low dosage isn't working.

If anyone can offer advice on how to make her understand what I feel needs to be done, I would really appreciate it.  I am also a little concerned if I am beginning a process of continually increasing my medication and having it eventually stop working all together.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

cdn oxycontin 80 with yellow in them?

Submitted by burritos on May 8, 2008 - 12:57am.

ive just seen some oxycontin 80 mg pills and they say cdn 80 on them, i belive they are manufactured by purude pharmacuticals as a generic equivilent to regular oc 80 pills.

but theese ones look different, they have yellow/orange spots sometimes in the otherwise green coating. also, some of the imprints arent all the way pressed onto the pills, is this regular for generic pills or not? do you think they are fake? i dont want my friend (who has cronic pain) or anybody else for that matter, taking them if they are fake pills. i heard about that fentynal filler pill that was going around with the fake oc 80s. could something like this be happening with these pills?

i have seen a number of oc 80s before but i dont know if i have run across these perticular ones. has anyone else on here seen these pills  with these inconsistencies before?

First time post

Hello, I just became a member after reading posts from this site for a long time.  I have been taking Hydrocodone for about 5yrs now for Fibromyalgia.  I am 32yrs old and before being diagnosed with Fibro, I would take a ton of OTC pain meds.  I think I really messed my stomach up.  I finally found a very caring doctor who was willing to work with the Fibro diagnosis, I say that because so many other doctors seemed to think the pain was all in my head or something.  I couldn't understand why people, doctors too, would rather believe a 25yr old woman who was always very active and happy would want to be complaining about pain all the time.  Like I said I finally found a wonderful doctor.  He perscribed me Cymbalta and Hydrocodone 7.5 and just recently when I told him I was finding I would have to take more Hydro he raised my perscription.  That's not to say he writes the scripts without a small talk on not becoming to dependant.  We both know I am addicted, I mean it's been 5yrs.,  but he keeps me thinking about it.  This site has helped me to realize I am not a bad person for taking pain medication.  It helps my quality of life, and I believe that is what matters.  Thanks to you all.
